Our Story

Pilotaje y Servicios Marítimos de Panama S.A, (Pilsemar) was incorporated under the laws of the Republic of Panama on September 23, 1992, and was formed by a visionary group of pilots who believed in the development of private pilotage throughout the nation.

This visionary organization started its formal operations at the port of Manzanillo in 1994, piloting the first ship that arrived at this terminal, the M/V Atlas Highway. Since then, this port has rapidly evolved in the largest container terminal in Panama and Latin America with the active participation of Pilsemar.

In 1995, Petroterminal de Panamá, S.A invited Pilsemar Pilots to provide their services to PTP Oil Pipeline Terminals of Charco Azul (on the Pacific side) and Chiriqui Grande (on the Atlantic side). Thus, pilotage was provided at the SBMs' buoys at Chiriqui Grande and also berthing ULCC size vessels alongside at Charco Azul, an example being the M/V Alster Ore (301.000.00 Mt. DWT). In addition, we have done many transshipment operations in various areas, including Charco Azul, Portobelo, Taboguilla Island and in Panama Bay with an impeccable safety record.

Our Story

Initially Pilsemar, S.A, was formed with 75 members, all of them Panama Canal Pilots, that participated in the first general assembly in November of 1992. Being then and still, the largest private pilotage company of Panama with more than 90 members, therefore able to provide services when and where required.

In our mission to maintain and promote High standards of professional pilotage services nationwide, we have developed A especial training program for senior merchant marine officers.

As a result of our training program we already have a team of fully qualifited pilots who are not Panama Canal Pilots.

We also have group of three pilots in the same condition, who next year will be promoted to fully qualified pilots, while some others continue in the training program.
